Eternal Life and Marriage Question.

30 Apr

This first question comes to me by way of Facebook. I thought it would be an interesting question to start out with.

Pastor George,

A friend of mine asked me this question. Would you care to offer insight?  If Christians believe in Eternal Life then why is marriage ‘till death do us part?’

Wow, what a great question this is, thank you for bringing it to my attention.  I must admit, this was a question I have never been asked before. As soon as I saw it I thought, that is exactly the type of question that I am looking for. Together let’s look for the answer- I think what I have come up with will be interesting and informative.

To answer this question we have to go back to the very first mention of husband and wife in the Bible.  The first recorded wedding actually takes place in Genesis, Chapter Two. We all know the story God says, “it isn’t good for man to be alone.” Then God put Adam to sleep, and took out a rib and made a woman. God brought the woman to Adam who called her woman, but Adam made the first wedding ritual he said in Verse Twenty-Three, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

Notice that in Adam’s declaration, woman is from his flesh and bone. Then in Verse Twenty-Four, we have the declaration from the word of God, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

Again, this is important.  I highlighted the most important statement about husbands and wives in this verse. They become one in flesh. Now let me show you how that helps us answer our question.

God tells Adam, when he places him in the garden the rules of the garden. Those are also found in Genesis, Chapter Two. Particularly look at Verse Seventeen, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die

Why is this important for our answer? Simply, God can’t lie; so if he said man would die, then man died. But man, like God, was created as an eternal being. Man’s flesh passes away but man’s Spirit, which is the part like God, lives forever. Man’s Spirit is the part that gets Eternal life. Man’s flesh is the part joined to another in marriage. It is the flesh that becomes one with another, it is the flesh that is joined to another in marriage, and it is the flesh that passes away from illness, disease, accident, or old age.

On top of that, our Spirit, when we become a Christian, becomes the Bride of Christ. In other words your Eternal part is married, just not the flesh and blood person we chose for the short time we are on earth. Instead our Spirit, at salvation, becomes engaged to the lover of your eternal spirit, Jesus.  This is the reason that Christians only take a spouse on earth “till death do us part.” Because only our flesh is joined to the other or your soul, if you’re lucky and find your “soul mate.”) Your soul is not the eternal part of you, it is the Spirit that lives on in Eternal life. Your Spirit is what will be joined in matrimony with Jesus Christ, at the marriage supper of the Lamb.

I hope that answers this question for everyone. If you have a question about anything faith, spiritual, religious, God, Christianity, or the Bible email me at and I will put it on the list of questions to be answered here on askpastorgeorge in the future. Come back Wednesday for our next question and the answer. Until then keep thinking on spiritual things and seeking
God. He promises those who seek  HIM with their whole heart will find HIM.

The Word also says, that in Heaven, you are not married, nor given in marriage. (Matt. 22:30: Mark 12:25; Luke 17:27; and Luke 20:30-35).This cancels out what some ‘religions’ teach: that you will be with your first husband when you get to Heaven if only you are married in the Temple. They teach that unless you are married through temple rights, you won’t make it to Heaven with your spouse.

This is true but please remember that the goal of this site is to answer questions in a way that is non judgemental. I don’t want to start attacking others beliefs or religions on this site. Thanks

Very interesting post, Pastor, and well written. I always took this for granted, until death do us part, and never thought of why. Your answer lends more depth to the words, a better understanding. Thank you. I am looking forward to reading your answers to other questions as well.

The story in Luke 20:27-35 is an excellent example. The Sadducee’s came to Jesus and asked this very question about marriage and Eternal Life.

I’m coming in late to the party. I think one reason it says till death to us part is because God knew we would only need a mate here on earth, because once we get to heaven God and Jesus will be everything to us. The flesh side of us can’t help but hope or think a special place will be made for our mates and us, but that is only for God to know. The word says. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate. So if he didn’t want man to separate it, I can only assume he would not either. His ways is so over our ways we can only guess and do our best to get it right.. 🙂

Samantha I am willing to admit that I definitely don’t think like God does so there is always the chance. I answered based on what I can find in scripture.
